Egyptian scholar stresses ‘religious duty’ of Muslims to support Iran amid US-Israeli attacks
a prominent Egyptian Sunni scholar characterized support for Iran as a "religious and Islamic necessity" in the context of current disputes involving Gulf Arab states and Iran.

Sheikh Salama Abdel Qawy, an Egyptian Sunni scholar and former official at Egypt's Ministry of Endowments, emphasized that Iran is a Muslim country and described supporting it against U.S. and Israeli attacks as a "religious and Islamic duty", reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
He stated that Muslims should stand with the party subjected to aggression, not with the aggressor.
Sheikh Salama Abdel Qawy stated in comments published on his personal YouTube channel that supporting Iran in the face of pressure and attacks by the United States and Israel is not a matter of political alignment but rather a religious and legal obligation under Islamic law.
Responding to a question about why he had "taken Iran's side against our brothers in the Gulf countries," Abdel Qawy argued that the premise of the question was flawed because the current conflict is not between Iran and the Persian Gulf Arab states.
He said: "Whether we like it or not, whether we support Iran or oppose it, Iran is ultimately a Muslim country. It has come under attack from non-Muslim countries such as the United States, as well as Netanyahu and his allies. From the perspective of Islamic law and belief, a Muslim should never stand against another Muslim."
The Egyptian scholar stressed that he harbors no hostility toward Persian Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and said that his position is based on enduring religious principles rather than political preferences or temporary disputes.
He added that if the United States were to attack Saudi Arabia or the UAE, he would unquestionably stand alongside those countries as well, because under Islamic jurisprudence, a party subjected to aggression has the legitimate right to defend itself.
He further highlighted any potential Iranian attacks against U.S. interests within the framework of legitimate self-defense, stating that this right is recognized in both Islamic jurisprudence and international law.
He criticized Arab governments for abandoning the Palestinian people and Gaza, arguing that Iran, because of its support for the "Axis of Resistance" and the Palestinian cause, deserves at least a measure of appreciation.
Abdel Qawy welcomed the growing number of voices in Saudi Arabia and Qatar opposing involvement in a war with Iran, describing this trend as a sign of political rationality.
He also praised Arab intellectuals who believe that relations with Iran should not be sacrificed for the sake of Israel.
Concluding his remarks, the Egyptian Sunni scholar stated: "The United States is an unjust aggressor, and we will always stand with the side that has been subjected to aggression, not with the aggressor. Wherever justice lies, that is the side on which I will stand."
He further emphasized that sectarian and political differences should not overshadow moral and religious responsibilities when responding to regional crises.
