A senior Lebanese cleric has warned President Joseph Aoun against divisive remarks stressing he should unite the nation not create division.
Lebanese cleric warns Aoun against divisive remarks
Sheikh Ahmed Kabalan, Lebanese Jafari mufti, in a recent letter, addressed the country’s President stressing Aoun must not speak about representing the people, because discussion of national and popular representation begins with Nabih Berri, Speaker of Parliament, and Sheikh Naim Qassem, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

His remarks came after earlier comments by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun who claimed that Sheikh Naim Qassem, Secretary-General of Hezbollah, does not represent the Lebanese people.

Despite the continued occupation of part of Lebanese territory and the ongoing attacks by Israel against Lebanese citizens, he emphasized accommodation and dialogue with Israel and, criticizing Hezbollah, said, “Hezbollah must understand that negotiation is the only way to deal with Israel.

Kabalan said,” If it were not for Lebanon’s legendary resistance, which throughout this war was crushing the Zionist regime’s war machine along the entire southern border, Israel would have reached Baabda Palace (the Lebanese presidential palace).”

He added,” Anyone who obstructs the national defense efforts of the Lebanese Army and then calls for the Resistance to withdraw from south of the Litani River without the simultaneous withdrawal of the Zionist army is not a representative of Lebanon or its fronts.”

Hailing Iran’s constant support for Lebanon, Sheikh Kabalan stated that Iran, unlike the United States, does not use its allies against their own interests.

He said,” I would like to remind you that it was Iran that threatened to enter the war against terrorist Israel if it attacked the Lebanese capital, and the one who gave Israel the green light to attack Beirut was the U.S. Secretary of State, not Iran.”

He continued, “Tehran is the party that provided the greatest historical support for the liberation of Lebanese territory in the year 2000, and it remains committed to its pledge so that Lebanon will not be swallowed up by American plans and Israeli wars.”
