International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People: A Reminder of the Right to Self-Determination and Independence

Fundamental rights of Palestinians—from the right to self-determination to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the return of refugees—remain unfulfilled.
International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People: A Reminder of the Right to Self-Determination and Independence
Every year on November 29, coinciding with the anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s 1947 Resolution 181 on the partition of Palestine, the United Nations commemorates the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
In recent years, this day has gained greater significance due to the catastrophic situation in Gaza following the war of genocide launched by the Israeli occupying army on October 7, 2023. This war has resulted in more than 10,000 missing persons and over 160,000 killed or injured, most of them women and children.
Thousands of demonstrations, sit-ins, and solidarity events condemning these massacres have been held in streets, main squares, universities, and schools across capitals and cities worldwide.
A wave of international solidarity has also emerged through legal actions against the occupiers and their officials at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, severing diplomatic ties with the occupying regime, and recognizing the State of Palestine by many governments.
This has led to arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister, and Yoav Gallant, the former Defense Minister of the regime.
On this day, cultural activities, political festivals, and large solidarity gatherings are organized by solidarity movements, political committees, Palestinian embassies, and supporters of the just Palestinian cause. Governments and civil society groups worldwide also respond to the UN’s call by holding a wide range of annual events to mark the occasion.
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People provides an opportunity to highlight the reality that, despite decades and numerous related international resolutions, the Palestinian issue remains unresolved.
The Palestinian people have yet to achieve their legitimate rights affirmed by the General Assembly, including the right to self-determination free from external interference, the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.
On November 29, 2012, Palestine joined the United Nations as a non-member observer state, and on September 30, 2015, the Palestinian flag was raised at UN headquarters and offices worldwide.
