Widely circulated videos show Bortolazzi wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh and recounting the moment he converted. He explained: “My colleagues were mostly Turkish and Muslim. During prayer, Israeli police intervened and stopped them. I felt compelled to stand against that behavior. Soon after, I recited the Shahada with a friend.”
Before declaring his faith, Bortolazzi had asked his friend whether God would accept him despite his tattoos. Bakir Doyli, a fellow activist, reassured him that faith is a matter of belief, not appearance.
Bortolazzi repeated the Shahada while being transferred to an Israeli prison vehicle, marking his formal conversion. Doyli later remarked: “I told him, ‘Tami, you paid the price of Islam in the tenth second of your faith.’”
Bortolazzi described the experience as a profound moment of clarity and inner peace: “I felt as though I had been reborn.”
The Global Flotilla for Resilience, which aimed to break the siege of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid, has become a symbol of solidarity between Muslims and non-Muslims. Activists from diverse nationalities and faiths joined forces in support of humanity and Palestinian freedom.
