Malta to recognize Palestine in September UN meeting

Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that his country will recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Abela made the announcement just hours after a similar declaration by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and days after France announced its plans to recognize the Palestinian state.
 
In a Facebook post, Abela said, “Our position expresses our commitment to efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.”
 
In May, Abela announced that Malta would recognize the State of Palestine during the Two-State Solution conference, which was originally scheduled for June but was postponed and officially kicked off two days ago in New York.
 
Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told his cabinet that the United Kingdom will recognize the state of Palestine by September unless Israel takes “substantive steps” to end its war on Gaza and commits to a lasting peace process.

 
French President, Emmanuel Macron, said the country will officially recognize a Palestinian state this September at the United Nations General Assembly.
 
In a statement on the social media platform X on Thursday evening, Macron expressed his hope that this decision would contribute to peace in the region.
 
A number of other world countries, among them New Zealand, Portugal and Australia have signed a joint statement expressing support for a two-state solution as part of international efforts to end the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
 
Currently, the State of Palestine is recognized as a sovereign nation by 147 of the 193 UN member states, representing 75 percent of the international community.
