Baghaei: U.S. Betrayal and IAEA’s Political Report Undermined Diplomacy

Baghaei began by honoring the memory of those martyred in the recent attacks, stating, “In recent days, we have buried some of the most honorable sons of this nation. Their sacrifice will serve as a foundation for the growing dignity of the Islamic Republic.”

He also marked the anniversary of the 1987 chemical attack on Sardasht, emphasizing Germany’s role in arming Saddam Hussein’s regime. “This is a national demand that spans generations. We proposed a fact-finding mechanism two years ago to investigate Germany’s support for Iraq’s chemical weapons program, and we are still pursuing it,” he said.

Baghaei sharply criticized the latest report by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, calling it “inappropriate” and “a pretext for military aggression.” He added that the report laid the groundwork for a politically motivated resolution by the IAEA Board of Governors. “We have raised this issue with the relevant bodies and will continue to follow up,” he said.

He stressed that the IAEA must avoid political influence and adhere strictly to its technical mandate. “How can the Director General expect routine cooperation when Iran’s nuclear facilities have just been attacked?” he asked.

Baghaei called on international institutions, particularly the UN Security Council, to formally recognize the aggression and hold the perpetrators accountable. “What occurred was an act of aggression in every legal sense. The Security Council must acknowledge this and take appropriate measures against the United States and Israel,” he asserted.

Turning to recent statements by German officials, Baghaei condemned the use of the term “dirty work” to describe the Israeli attack on Iran. “This language evokes the same rhetoric used to justify Hitler’s racist actions. It is a historical and eternal shame for Germany,” he said. “For Iranians, this is salt on an old wound—one that recalls Germany’s role in arming Saddam with chemical weapons.”

He also addressed the Iranian parliament’s law mandating the suspension of cooperation with the IAEA, stating that it reflects public outrage over the agency’s silence in the face of attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites and the assassination of its scientists. “The Director General must reconsider how the agency engages with Iran,” he said.

Baghaei warned that normalizing such acts of aggression would only pave the way for their repetition. He also condemned threats made against Iran’s foreign minister on social media by Israeli-linked accounts, urging international organizations to respond to Israel’s repeated violations of international law.

On the issue of Iranian nationals detained in the U.S., Baghaei described the arrests as “racist” and said they were based solely on nationality. “We have received no convincing explanation from the U.S. side. Our Interests Section in Washington is actively pursuing the matter,” he said.

Finally, Baghaei dismissed recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump as part of a broader pattern of erratic behavior. “These fluctuations are not reliable and should be seen as psychological and media tactics rather than serious diplomatic signals,” he said. “Let us not forget that just two days before the sixth round of indirect talks, the U.S. and Israel launched a military strike that derailed the entire diplomatic process.”
