Araghchi: Sardasht Remains the Hiroshima of the Middle East; Recent Attacks Echo Past Chemical Crimes

In his statement, Sardasht was described as the “first civilian city in the world to be targeted with chemical weapons”, and likened to Hiroshima: “Children of Sardasht learned the word ‘death’ from the blistered faces of their mothers before they learned the alphabet.”
Araghchi: Sardasht Remains the Hiroshima of the Middle East; Recent Attacks Echo Past Chemical Crimes
Araghchi condemned the role of Western powers in enabling Saddam Hussein’s chemical arsenal, stating: “The chemical clouds over Sardasht rose from the factories of those who claim to champion human rights.”

He drew a direct line between the 1987 chemical attack and recent Israeli strikes on Iranian chemical facilities, warning of the risk of a “humanitarian and environmental catastrophe”. He added that such actions are being met with “deadly silence or tacit support” from some Western governments.

The Foreign Minister announced that Iran has formally requested an emergency session of the OPCW Executive Council to address and condemn these attacks.

He also emphasized Iran’s historic role in the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention, noting:
“This convention owes much to the cries for justice from the peace-loving people of Iran—especially the people of Sardasht.”

Araghchi reiterated that Iran, as the largest victim of chemical weapons in modern history, remains a staunch advocate for a world free of weapons of mass destruction and a nuclear-free Middle East.

In closing, he honored the Iranian people’s resilience in the face of recent aggression:
“Sardasht is not just a historical tragedy—it is a symbol of resistance for all nations that refuse to bow to oppression.”
