Iranian cleric offers condolences over passing of Pakistani scholar

The Secretary General of World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought has hailed renowned Pakistani scholar, professor Khurshid Ahmad for his activism, scholarly contributions and interfaith engagement.

Hujjat-ul-Islam Hamid Shahriari, made the comments in a message addressing the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Hafiz Naeem ur Rahman after the passing of the former leader of the Pakistani party, professor Ahmad, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

The Iranian cleric called professor Khurshid Ahmad as a philosopher, politician and an Islamic activist who “constantly thought of developing Islamic economy and played an influential role in expanding Islamic morales in Pakistan and the Indian peninsula.”

He referred to the meeting of the late Pakistani scholar with the founder of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini (RA) in exile during the early days of the Islamic Revolution and exchange of views on leading the Islamist groups in Pakistan as well as mutual cooperation between the two countries.

Hujjat-ul-Islam Hamid Shahriari expressed sympathy with the Ameer of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Hafiz Naeem ur Rahman and the Pakistani nation.


Professor Khurshid Ahmad joined Jamiat-e-Talaba in 1949 rising to chief administrator between 1953 and 1955. A year after, he became affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, later serving as the party’s Vice President.

He also engaged in interfaith efforts, holding roles with various international organizations, including the Standing Conference on Jews, Christians and Muslims in Europe.

A leading Islamic economist, academic and former senator of Pakistan, professor Ahmad passed away aged 93 in Leicester, UK.
