Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid, the president of the Malaysian Islamic center MAPIM slammed the western double standards that supports Israeli nuclear threat yet imposes sanctions on other countries that pursue nuclear activities, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
He said,” If nations like Iran are heavily scrutinized under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Israel must also be subjected to the same level of transparency and accountability.”
MAPIM President stressed Israel’s immediate ratification of the NPT to prevent nuclear proliferation in the region calling for sanctions against Israeli regime if it continues to evade international nuclear oversight.
The President of Malaysian Islamic organization repeated a call for a Middle East Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zone (MENWFZ), which has been repeatedly proposed at the United Nations yet consistently blocked by Israel and its allies.
Azmi Abdul Hamid also lashed out Israel’s impunity during decades of producing and keeping nukes without monitoring by the world bodies saying,” It is unacceptable that Israel, a known nuclear power, continues to evade international scrutiny and remains outside the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) while aggressively condemning other nations over their nuclear ambitions.”
He noted, “Israel’s nuclear opacity, that refuses to confirm or deny its possession of nuclear weapons, creates a dangerous precedent in the Middle East.”
According to MAPIM President reports indicate Israel possesses at least 80 to 400 nuclear warheads, making it the only nuclear-armed regime in the region while it remains reluctant to sign the NPT or allow IAEA inspections.
MAPIM called on Muslim-majority nations, particularly the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to exert diplomatic and economic pressure to hold Israel accountable urging the Malaysian government to take a firm diplomatic stance at the United Nations and IAEA in demanding nuclear accountability for Israel.
It called on the OIC and Arab League to unite in lobbying for sanctions against Israel until it complies with international nuclear regulations.
Azmi Abdul Hamid voiced MAPIM’s full support for Doha calling for the International Atomic Energy Agency oversight of the Israeli nuclear program.
