Ayatollah Sistani announces beginning of Ramadan 2025
The senior Iraqi Shia jurist, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Sistani has announced the first and last day of the fasting month of Ramadan which is set to begin next week in Iraq.

In a statement issued by the bureau of the top cleric, the crescent that marks the beginning of Ramadan is expected to be observed on Saturday March 1; hence, Sunday will be the first day of the fasting month in Iraq, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
According to the statement, Sunday March 30 will be the last day of the fasting month of Ramadan.
Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk during Ramadan with family iftar meals, charity activities, prayers and Qur’an recitation among the most recommended activities during Ramadan.
At the end of one month of fasting and prayer, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr on first of Shawwal, tenth month in the Islamic lunar calendar.
The beginning and final day of the months are announced by the senior jurists based on moonsighting by credible sources and expert scholars.
