The international contest kicked off in the eastern city of Konya on Thursday, September 29, according to Anadolu Agency.

The opening ceremony was addressed by Ali Erbas, the president of Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet).

He underlined the importance of benefiting from the teachings of the Holy Quran, adding that in order to build the future, we need the Holy Book.

He also wished success for all the contenders and said it is a kind of competition in which there are no losers.

Sixty-three Quran memorizers and reciters from 49 countries are competing in the international Quranic event.

The competition will run until October 8 and winners will be announced and awarded in a ceremony in Ankara, which will be attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Iran has two contenders in the Quranic event: Vahid Khazaei in the recitation category and Hossein Khani in memorization of the entire Quran.
