Russia on Monday summoned the US ambassador in Moscow to protest “insulting remarks” by the US president about his Russian counterpart, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

In a statement on its official website, the ministry said it handed a note of protest to US Ambassador John Sullivan over insulting remarks by US President Joe Biden about Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"It was emphasized that such statements by the American president, unworthy of a statesman of such a high rank, put Russian-American relations on the verge of rupture. We warned that the hostile actions taken against Russia would receive a decisive and firm rebuff," the ministry said.
The ministry added it also asked the US ambassador to ensure the normal working of Russian diplomatic missions in the US.
Responding to a reporter's question on March 16, Biden had said he considers Putin "a war criminal."
In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the US president, being a leader of a country that has been "bombing people all over the world" for many years and dropped nuclear bombs on the defeated Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has no right to accuse the Russian president of war crimes.
According to UN estimates, at least 925 civilians have been killed and around 1,500 injured in Ukraine since Russia launched a war on its western neighbor on Feb. 24.
The UN has said the real figures are likely to be much higher as conditions on the ground make verification difficult.
Over 3.38 million refugees have fled from Ukraine since the war began, while some 6.5 million are estimated to be internally displaced in the country, according to the UN.
