Austrian court lifts Hijab ban for school students

12 Dec 2020 - 16:14

Constitutional court in Austria has found the law which banned headscarf for girls below ten as "discriminatory" overturning the measure that particularly aimed Muslim headscarves.

The high court confirmed that the ban was selective against Muslim schoolgirls and "separates them in a discriminatory manner from other pupils", reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

Muslim community in Austria has welcomed the judgement which has decided not to curtail the religious freedom of those Muslim women who find headscarf an integral part of their religious practice.

According to a 2018 survey, about 4.2 percent of people in Austria are Muslims. Hijab ban at schools in Austria has been effective since autumn 2019 as thousands of people held protests condemning the segregation against Muslim women.
