Palestinian man succumbed to wounds sustained by Israeli forces

11 Dec 2020 - 23:12

47-year-old disabled Palestinian man has succumbed to the wounds he sustained by Israeli forces in West Bank back in August.

Palestinian media outlets reported that Nasser Halawa, 47, died on Friday of injuries he had sustained on August 16.

Faten, one of Halawa’s sisters, said the man, who suffered from hearing impairment, was shot by Israeli forces near the Qalandia Checkpoint in the West Bank while he was on his way to their sister’s home in the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds, where he also wanted to pray in the al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Israeli forces opened fire at Halawa after he failed to hear their warning to stop as he selected a wrong path due to changes the Israeli troops had made at the checkpoint, according to Faten.

Halawa had been receiving treatment over the past months.

In a separate development, anti-settlement protests continued in the West Bank on Friday.

Clashes erupted between the protesters and Israeli forces in the village of al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah.

A number of people suffered breathing difficulties as the troops used tear gas as well as live ammunition against the demonstrators, who had taken to the streets to condemn an Israeli plan to construct a new settlement in the area of Ras al-Tin in Kafr Malik.

The protests came a week after Israeli forces killed a 14-year-old boy during similar protests in al-Mughayyir.

Meanwhile, two Palestinians were hit by rubber bullets and 15 others suffered breathing difficulties due to inhaling tear gas fired by Israeli forces during clashes with Palestinians. The locals had gathered for an event to sow seeds in a land threatened with seizure by Israel in the village of Bayt Dajan, east of Nablus City.

The Israeli forces also cracked down on an anti-settlement event in the area of al-Ras, near the town of Salfit.

The troops also attacked the weekly anti-settlement protests in the village of Kafr Qaddum, leaving dozens of people injured.

A number of people were also injured by Israeli forces in Bab al-Zawiya area in the city of al-Khalil (Hebron).

The injuries included rubber-bullet wounds and breathing difficulties due to inhaling tear gas.

Breathing difficulties were also reported in similar clashes in the city of al-Bireh.
More than 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds.

Since US President Donald Trump took office in December 2016, Israel has stepped up its settlement expansion activities in defiance of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which pronounces settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds “a flagrant violation under international law.”

All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law as they are built on occupied land.
