Iran’s FM Zarif calls on world community to condemn state terrorism

29 Nov 2020 - 9:29

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called on the international community to condemn state terrorism and reach consensus to counter adventurism in the region.

Zarif made the remarks in a Saturday tweet in the Chinese language in another reaction to the assassination of prominent Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh by suspected Israel-tied terrorists near the capital Tehran.

Fakhrizadeh, who headed the Iranian Defense Ministry’s Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND), was targeted on Friday in a multi-pronged attack involving at least one explosion and small fire by a number of assailants in Absard city of Damavand County, Tehran Province.

In his tweet, the top Iranian diplomat said terrorists have assassinated another prominent scientist of the country and added that such a cowardly act of terror is a clear violation of international rules and moral and humanitarian principles.

Zarif emphasized that the international community is duty-bound to counter such measures.

In order to preserve regional and international peace and stability, Iran is at the forefront of the fight against terrorism, the foreign minister said.

Iranian government officials and military commanders have hinted that the Israeli regime could have been behind the terror attack, vowing harsh revenge against all the criminals involved.

In a tweet on Friday, Zarif roundly condemned the terror attack, saying there were “serious indications” of the Israeli regime’s role in the assassination of Fakhrizadeh, a professor of physics at Imam Hussein University of Tehran.

“Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today. This cowardice—with serious indications of Israeli role—shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators,” he wrote.

The top Iranian diplomat called on the international community, especially the European Union, to “end their shameful double standards & condemn this act of state terror.”

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday warned of a plot hatched by Israel to incite chaos in the region, vowing that Tehran will at the proper time respond to the assassination of its prominent nuclear scientist.

“Our people are wiser than to fall in the trap of the Zionists’ conspiracy. They are thinking of creating chaos and unrest, but they should know that we have already read their hands and that they will not succeed in achieving their evil objectives,” Rouhani told a cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raeisi said on Saturday that the United States and the Israeli regime believed that they should have a monopoly on science and technology, but the assassinated Iranian scientist was “one of the individuals who shattered their belief.”

He condemned Fakhrizadeh’s assassination and said he had succeeded in preparing the ground for defending the country and the region through his mastery of science and technology and played a leading role in enhancing Iran’s defense power.

He emphasized that Iran would not stop its scientific path towards the promotion of power after Fakhrizadeh’s murder.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei called on Iranian experts to preserve the scientific and technical legacy of the assassinated nuclear scientist and ordered the punishment of his assassins.

In a message released on Saturday, Ayatollah Khamenei added, “All relevant administrators must seriously place two crucial matters on their agendas: 1st to investigate this crime and firmly prosecute its perpetrators and its commanders, 2nd to continue the martyr’s scientific and technological efforts in all the sectors where he was active.”
