Hamas hails UK lawmakers’ opposition with Israeli annexation plan

6 May 2020 - 13:09

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has lauded British legislators over their opposition with a recent decision announced by Tel Aviv regime for annexation of the Palestinian lands in the besieged Gaza.

In a letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday, 127 current and former MPs from across the political spectrum voiced their outrage at the Israeli regime's West Bank annexation scheme.

They urged the premier to make it clear that annexation is illegal under international law and "will have severe consequences including sanctions."

"International law is crystal clear. The acquisition of territory through war is prohibited," further read the letter, which was organized by the Council for Arab-British Understanding (Caabu).

On Tuesday, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem said in a press conference that the stance adopted by these lawmakers and the widespread international rejection and condemnation of Israel's annexation plans confirmed the isolation of "the Zio-American policy" against Palestinians.

The Hamas spokesman, whose remarks were carried by Palestinian Information Center, also called on all parties, which oppose Tel Aviv's annexation scheme, to adopt practical and serious measures to bar the occupying entity from continuing its expansion policy and punish it for its ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people and land.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing a number of criminal indictments, has repeatedly stressed that he would start plans for annexing more areas in the West Bank on July 1, in accordance with US President Donald Trump’s controversial plan, commonly known as the “Deal of the Century.”

Defying international outcry, Trump officially unveiled his proposal for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in January at the White House with Netanyahu on his side, while Palestinian representatives were not invited.

Trump’s scheme largely meets Israel’s demands while creating a Palestinian state with limited control over its own security and borders, enshrining the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds as “Israel’s undivided capital” and allowing the regime to annex settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley.

Officially known as the “Peace to Prosperity,” the proposal, which further denies the right of return for Palestinian refugees to their homeland, is also in total disregard for UN Security Council resolutions and the opposition by the vast majority of the international community.

Palestinian leaders – who cut all ties with Washington in late 2017 after Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as the “capital” of Israel – immediately rejected the Trump ‘deal,’ with President Mahmoud Abbas saying it “belongs to the dustbin of history.”

They regard the scheme as Washington’s seal of approval for Israel’s long-desired annexation of territories it has been illegally occupying for decades.
