India to send team to Iran for Chabahar Port development

7 Aug 2013 - 10:02

India will soon dispatch a delegation to Iran to explore avenues for the development of the strategic Chabahar port in southeastern Iran.

The delegation will hold negotiations with Iranian officials on a trilateral agreement for the transit of Indian goods to landlocked Afghanistan via Chabahar port, the Press Trust of India reported on Monday.

The report added that the two issues were discussed between Indian Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari and Iranian President Hassan Rohani soon after Rohani's inauguration in Tehran on Sunday.

Indian Ambassador to Kabul Amar Sinha had earlier underlined the importance of Chabahar port for the transit of Indian commodities to Afghanistan.

On July 17, Sinha said his country is not willing to use Pakistan territory for transit, stressing that Chabahar is the best option for this purpose.

Chabahar port -- located 72 kilometers (44 miles) west of Pakistan's Gwadar port -- holds immense strategic and economic significance for India.

The port is already connected to the city of Zaranj in Afghanistan's southwestern province of Nimruz and can serve as India's entry point to Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond.
