Scientific and technological advancement, cornerstone of the martyred Leader’s national development strategy

Haroon Aziz, in an interview with the Taqrib News Agency (TNA) conducted during the nationwide funeral proceedings for the martyred Leader, emphasized that the late Leader’s efforts to drive scientific progress were central to his strategic vision for the country.

“Ayatollah Khamenei attached special importance to the systematic cultivation of scientists, researchers, and highly skilled professionals from among the nation’s talented youth,” Aziz stated. He noted that this vision led to the establishment of the National Elites Foundation (Bonyad-e Melli-e Nokhebegan) in 2005, an institution designed to identify, support, and nurture gifted individuals capable of contributing to the country’s progress.

According to Aziz, Iran faced a significant challenge during the 1990s due to the migration of highly qualified professionals to Western countries. He added that the National Elites Foundation played a crucial role in reversing this trend by creating conditions that encouraged talented individuals to remain in Iran and dedicate their expertise to national development.

He further noted that these elites were nurtured not only as skilled professionals but also as individuals committed to serving their nation through a value-based approach to science and innovation.

“Ayatollah Khamenei consistently regarded scientific elites as strategic national assets whose knowledge should be directed toward improving society and strengthening the country’s productive capacity,” Aziz said. “The Leader viewed the development of human capital as indispensable for utilizing Iran’s natural resources, geographical advantages, and industrial potential for the benefit of the public.”

Referring to the Leader’s meeting with distinguished scientists on October 2, 2024, Aziz stated that Ayatollah Khamenei encouraged open dialogue on new ideas in industry, economics, technology, and the humanities.

During that meeting, he emphasized the exceptional capabilities of the Iranian people, the importance of expanding the community of scientific elites, and the greater responsibilities that accompany intellectual excellence.

Aziz observed that the Leader consistently encouraged young scientists to pursue original research rather than being satisfied with academic achievements alone, regarding scientific inquiry and innovation as essential drivers of progress. Furthermore, the Leader attached great importance to the establishment of research centers and think tanks capable of generating strategic solutions.

According to Aziz, this long-term strategy has contributed to remarkable achievements in fields such as medicine, vaccine production, advanced engineering, defense technology, and software development. “These accomplishments reflect the practical implementation of Ayatollah Khamenei’s vision of scientific self-reliance and technological independence,” he argued.

Aziz noted that the Leader also championed the expansion of knowledge-based companies, viewing them as a vital bridge between scientific excellence and national prosperity. He insisted that such development be guided by rigorous standards of quality and innovation.

Reflecting on the trajectory since the Islamic Revolution, Aziz noted that early efforts in reconstruction and infrastructure evolved into sophisticated technological achievements across sectors including agriculture, food security, and industrial development.

In conclusion, Aziz stated that Ayatollah Khamenei’s legacy in science and technology extends beyond mere technical achievement. “He regarded knowledge, innovation, and human talent as the strategic foundations for national independence, economic resilience, and the advancement of the Islamic civilization,” he said, adding that this vision continues to inspire efforts to build a knowledge-based society that contributes to both Iran and the broader Muslim world.
