Sunni Cleric: Desecration of Religious Sanctities Hurts the Feelings of Muslims

Mowlavi Khalil Naroui, Imam of the Imam Azam Mosque in Gardayesh Fendersk, Ramian County, Golestan Province, condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran, the burning of mosques, and insults to religious sanctities, describing such acts as morally unacceptable and deeply offensive to millions of Muslims worldwide.

In an interview with Taghrib News Agency(TNA), Naroui criticized the recent incidents in Iran, stating: “Unfortunately, recent events witnessed actions aimed at inflaming societal tensions and targeting the religious beliefs of the people by burning the Quran and disrespecting mosques.”
He emphasized that disrespect toward sacred texts and places of worship is unacceptable in any religion, and all divine religions stress the sanctity of holy books and places of worship.
The Quran is a guide for ethics, life, and morality, and mosques are houses of God for worship and spiritual peace. Therefore, attacking the Holy Quran or mosques is contrary to humanity and universally condemned,” Naroui said.
He added: “From the Islamic perspective, mosques are centers of worship, solidarity, and spirituality, while the Quran represents divine guidance for mankind. Burning a mosque or the Quran directly contradicts Islamic values as well as universal ethical principles.”
Referring to history, he noted that whenever Islamic sanctities were insulted, waves of awakening and resistance emerged among Muslims and free people globally. He cited the historical reaction of Imam Khomeini to the publication of Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses as a landmark example.
Quoting Quran 61:8, Naroui said: "They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it."
He noted that on February 14, 1989 (25 Bahman 1367), Imam Khomeini’s historic fatwa demonstrated that defending Islamic sanctities transcends geographical borders, and the respect for the Quran and the Prophet is a red line for the Islamic Ummah.
Naroui stressed that such historic positions continue to inspire Muslims and freedom-seekers worldwide to stand firmly against any insult to sacred values.
“Today, burning the Quran, destroying mosques, and insulting Islamic symbols are part of a hostile agenda orchestrated by Zionist forces aimed at undermining the faith, unity, and religious identity of Muslims,” he said. “These acts stem from extremist and anti-spiritual ideologies and attempt to diminish the sanctity of divine values, while respect for sacred texts remains a universal principle shared by all divine religions and human cultures.”
He concluded: “A true Muslim never insults the Quran, mosques, or the sanctities of others. Islamic teachings are based on respect, ethics, and safeguarding the holiness of sacred sites. Respecting the worship places of other religions further underscores this high regard for sanctities in Islamic culture.”
“Any act of desecration of the Holy Quran or mosques, planned and executed by the usurping Zionist regime, is strongly condemned,” Naroui emphasized.
