Iranian Cleric: Unity Discourse Must Move from Elite Circles to the Heart of Society

12 Sep 2025 - 15:00

Speaking during Unity Week and marking the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birth anniversary, Hosseini described Islamic unity as a rational and religious strategy for the survival of the Ummah, not a mere emotional or rhetorical project.

He stressed that unity does not mean erasing differences, but managing them wisely — distinguishing between natural diversity and enemy-driven division.

Hosseini argued that unity cannot be achieved through sermons and conferences alone, but requires operational programs, ethical commitment, and political sincerity. He proposed embedding the principles of proximity in both religious and public education systems, creating communication networks between Sunni and Shia scholars at local, regional, and global levels, launching joint Islamic media platforms that emphasize commonalities, and establishing intra-Ummah dispute resolution bodies such as a high Islamic arbitration council.
He urged religious leaders to move away from repeating historical grievances and instead reform mindsets, revisit the heritage of both Ahl al-Bayt and the Prophet’s Companions, and promote fairness in speech and conduct. Unity, he said, is not a sign of weakness but of religious maturity.
Hosseini warned that global Zionism and “hypocritical alliances” are seeking to destroy Muslim unity through normalization with Israel, while resistance has evolved from a military movement into a popular discourse. Developments in Palestine, Yemen, Syria, and Iraq, he said, show that the region’s people are rejecting Western liberal-democratic promises and reviving an Islamic and resistance-based identity.
He described the unity of the future as grassroots, rooted in human nature, resistance, and justice — centered on “smart resistance” rather than superficial or imposed unity. In the media sphere, he cautioned that a single clip, tweet, or fatwa can cause more damage than a military conflict, and urged unity advocates to produce modern, accessible content, engage in religious media literacy, and counter divisive propaganda with logic and composure.
Hosseini called on young Muslims to be trusted, equipped, and informed so they can lead unity efforts, suggesting international youth campaigns around justice, Palestine, the Qur’an, and the Prophet, as well as student and cultural exchanges across the Islamic world. He concluded: “Unity is not a tactic; it is a divine strategy. The future belongs to a nation that is a single hand, and as long as Palestine lies in ruins, Islamic unity only has meaning if it stands with the oppressed, not with the dealmakers.”
