Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA): Custodian of the Knowledge and Patience of the Prophet’s Household after Karbala

By: Maulana Mufti Dr. Syed Shah Sameeullah Hussaini Bandanawazi Chishti Qadri
Lesson and Message The entire blessed life of Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA) is clear proof that the strength of faith is more powerful than the sword, and the greatness of character is more lasting than worldly power. If Imam Hussain (RA) protected the religion of Islam with his sacred blood at Karbala, then Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA) carried the same message forward to future generations through knowledge, worship, patience, character, and spirituality.
Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA): Custodian of the Knowledge and Patience of the Prophet’s Household after Karbala
Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Zain-ul-Abideen Ali bin Hussain (RA) was the great-grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the beloved son of Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Hussain (RA), and one of the most eminent Imams of the pure Household of the Prophet.

He belongs to the respected generation of the Tabi’in who acquired knowledge from the noble Companions, and he holds a unique place in Islamic history because of his knowledge and spiritual insight, worship and devotion, asceticism and piety, patience and steadfastness, good character, and service to humanity.

After the tragedy of Karbala, it was he who preserved the intellectual, spiritual, and moral legacy of the Prophet’s Household and guided the Muslim community through his teachings and conduct. He led the Ahl-e-Bait for 34 years (61 to 95 AH), quietly spreading knowledge and spirituality, laying the foundation for the scholarly era of later Imams such as Imam Baqir and Imam Sadiq (RA).

Birth, Name, and Titles
Historians differ somewhat regarding the year of his birth, but according to the most widely accepted narration, he was born in 38 AH (5th of Sha’ban al-Mu’azzam) in Madinah al-Munawwarah. His mother’s name was Hazrat Shahrbano (or Fatima), who was the daughter of the Persian king Yazdgerd.

His given name was Ali, his kunya (patronymic) was Abu Muhammad and Abul Hasan, while his famous titles were Zain-ul-Abideen, Sajjad, Sayyid-us-Sajideen, Zaki, and Zul-Thafinat. These titles reflect his abundant worship, prolonged prostrations, humility, and deep connection with Allah. It is narrated that whenever he performed ablution, his face would change color at the thought of standing before Allah. When asked why, he replied: “Do you know before whom I am about to stand?”

Presence at Karbala and Continuation of the Lineage In 61 AH, at approximately twenty-two or twenty-three years of age, he was present at the battlefield of Karbala alongside his father, Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Hussain (RA), but due to severe illness he could not take part in the fighting. It was by Allah’s wisdom that the lineage of the Prophet’s Household continued through him. After the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and other loyal members of the Ahl-e-Bait, he was taken as a captive, along with the rest of the household, first to Kufa and then to Damascus.

After the martyrdom of his father, uncle, brothers, and other devoted members of the Ahl-e-Bait at Karbala, Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA) bore a mountain of grief rarely matched in history.

Gravely ill and confined to bed, he was taken captive along with the women and children of the household, first to Kufa and then to Damascus. On this arduous journey, his aunt, Hazrat Sayyida Zainab bint Ali (RA), performed the extraordinary duty of guarding and caring for the Ahl-e-Bait — a matchless tale of patience and steadfastness in Islamic history. Since he himself was severely ill and weak, Hazrat Zainab (RA) took upon her shoulders the responsibility of protecting the caravan, comforting the women and children, and safeguarding the dignity of the household.

When the tyrannical rulers in the courts of Kufa and Damascus sought to humiliate the Ahl-e-Bait, Hazrat Zainab (RA) proved through her courageous speech, and Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA) through his dignified bearing, that no matter how great the oppression, the courage and faith of the Prophet’s household could never be shaken. In this most difficult period, the mutual support, patience, and endurance of these two noble figures kept the message of Karbala alive and carried it forward to future generations.

The Historic Sermons of Kufa and Damascus
In Kufa, he delivered a most powerful address, making the people of Kufa recognize their disloyalty and betrayal of their pledge. In the court of Yazid in Damascus too, he delivered, with courage, wisdom, and dignity, a historic sermon in which he made clear his noble lineage, the status of the Prophet’s Household, and the atrocities inflicted upon them.

His address left a deep impression on those present in the court, and it became evident to many that the prisoners being branded as rebels were, in fact, the family of the Prophet ﷺ. After returning to Madinah al-Munawwarah, he spent the rest of his life in worship, teaching the Qur’an and Hadith, self-purification, reform of the community, service to humanity, and promoting good character.

Scholarly Contributions and Writings The well-known collection of supplications attributed to him, Sahifa Sajjadiyya, is a precious treasure of Islamic spiritual literature, also known among scholars as “Zabur Aal-e-Muhammad” (the Psalms of the Family of Muhammad). Likewise, in Risala al-Huquq (The Treatise on Rights), the rights of parents, children, relatives, neighbors, teachers, students, rulers, and subjects — various sections of society — are described in a most comprehensive and eloquent manner, and it remains a foundational source on ethics and social relations even today.

Imam Zuhri, Abu Hazim, and other eminent Tabi’in acquired knowledge and Hadith from him, and his narrations are preserved in the books of Hadith.

Worship and Devotion Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA) was the most distinguished figure of his era in worship. Fasting by day, standing in prayer at night, recitation of the Qur’an, remembrance of Allah, and lengthy prostrations were his regular practice. He prostrated so frequently that permanent marks formed on his forehead and the places of prostration, which is why he became known as Zul-Thafinat. Imam Dhahabi (RA) counted him among the most devout, God-fearing, and dignified people of his time, and a large body of Hadith scholars have testified to his reliability, knowledge, and piety.

Character, Generosity, and Service to Humanity Alongside worship, he was also a model of asceticism, contentment, forbearance, forgiveness, and generosity.

Though he belonged to the most honored family in the world, he lived a very simple life. Under cover of night, he would carry sacks of flour and dates on his own shoulders to poor and needy families in Madinah al-Munawwarah, never letting anyone know his identity. After his passing, when this practice stopped, the people of Madinah learned that the great figure who had secretly supported them for years was none other than Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA) himself. Historians record that at the time of his ritual washing, marks of carrying heavy loads were visible on his blessed shoulders — clear evidence of his service to humanity.

Accounts of his forbearance and forgiveness are also well known: when someone spoke harshly to him, he not only forgave them but also fulfilled their need. He frequently purchased slaves and freed them, especially on the nights of Eid. His humility was such that he always tried to keep his virtues hidden.

Children and Lineage Historians and genealogists differ somewhat regarding his children, but reliable books mention Imam Muhammad Baqir, Zaid bin Ali, Umar Ashraf, Hussain Asghar, Abdullah, Hasan, and Ali (RA). Among his daughters, Fatima, Khadija, Umm Kulthum, and Ayesha (RA) are also mentioned.

One of his notable wives was Hazrat Fatima bint Hasan (RA). Imam Muhammad Baqir (RA) rendered great services in spreading the sciences of the Qur’an and Hadith, while Zaid bin Ali (RA), known as Zaid the Wronged, rose to the rank of martyrdom by rebelling against tyranny and oppression.

Descendants of his family remain today standard-bearers of love and devotion to the Prophet’s Household — as the author of this article himself belongs to this very lineage.

Today, a large number of Sadat-e-Hussaini settled across various countries of the world trace their lineage back to Imam Hussain (RA) through Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA).

Passing and Burial Place According to most historians, Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA) passed away on 25 Moharram al-Haram, 95 AH, in Madinah al-Munawwarah, though some historical accounts differ somewhat regarding the exact year of his death.

Numerous historical narrations state that he was poisoned, and different historians attribute this to various rulers of the Umayyad dynasty, though the precise details remain disputed among historians. His sacred shrine is located in the historic cemetery of Jannat al-Baqi in Madinah al-Munawwarah, near the graves of Imam Hasan (RA), Imam Muhammad Baqir (RA), and Imam Jafar Sadiq (RA).

His teachings still remind the Muslim community today that even in the harshest trials, truth, patience, piety, good character, service to humanity, and complete trust in Allah are the true mark of a believer.

May Allah grant us patience, piety, devotion, good character, service to humanity, and love of the Prophet’s Household through the blessed example of Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (RA). Ameen.
