A brief biography of Ahmed Muhammad Ahmed al-Tayeb
Born in 1946 in the Egyptian Province of Qena, Ahmed Muhammad Ahmed al-Tayeb is descended from Imam Hasan (PBUH). To forward his education, he went to al-Azhar University, and got his bachelor's degree in the field of Islamic Philosophy in 1969.

Al-Tayeb holds a Ph. D in Islamic philosophy from the Paris-Sorbonne University, and has been president of Al-Azhar University since 2003. Between 2002 and 2003, el-Tayeb served as Grand Mufti of Egypt. Al-Tayeb is a hereditary Sufi shaykh from Upper Egypt and has expressed support for a global Sufi league.
Ahmed Muhammad Ahmed al-Tayeb is the current Grand Imam of al-Azhar and former president of al-Azhar University. He was appointed by the Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, following the death of Muhammad Sayyid Tantawy in 2010.
Ahmed al-Tayeb is considered to be one of the most moderate Sunni clerics in Egypt who always places stress on the necessity of refraining from extremism and prejudice; he prefers moderation and holds it the best way to understand the divine religion of Islam.
The Grand Imam of al-Azhar sternly warns of negative consequences of dispersion and sectarian in the World of Islam; in his term, "braving the foresaid problem is placed high on agenda in al-Azhar University."
The religious cleric always places accentuation on the necessity of respecting to other religions and principles. To him, the differences among Islamic denominations are so small as to not be worth arguing about.
In recent years, there have arisen a demand for promoting rapprochement and unity among Muslim nations; in this regard, Ahmed al-Tayeb urged Muslims to do their very utmost in this area. To him, Al-Azhar was always active in promoting unity and rapprochement among Muslim nations.

Ahmed al-Tayeb's Stance against Extremist Groups
Ahmed al-Tayeb has strongly condemned the measure perpetrated by DAESH noting the extremist group is acting "under the guise of this holy religion and have given themselves the name 'Islamic State' in an attempt to export their false Islam."
Tayeb has strongly come out against the practice of takfirism, declaring a Muslim an apostate, which is used by Islamic State to "judge and accuse anyone who doesn't tow their line with apostasy and outside the realm of the faith" and declares "jihad on peaceful Muslims" by using "flawed interpretations of some Qur'anic texts, the prophet's Sunna, and the Imams' views.
