Decoding latest events in Yemen

Beginning of the Supreme Political Council of Yemen manifests unity and cooperation of Yemeni groups and means a return to the accurate process halted by one and half year of imposed war on Sana’a.
Decoding latest events in Yemen
The halt in Yemen peace talks on the one hand and beginning of the Supreme Political Council in the country on the other hand are proofs for changes in the country’s recent months’ events.

Meanwhile, the new round of invasions by Saudi fighter jets against residential areas in Yemen has added to complexities of the situation.

Jafar Ghannadbashi, Iranian political expert on Africa and West Asia issues, in an interview with Taqrib News Agency (TNA) has detailed his views on Saudi war on Yemen.

Q: What reasons are behind standstill in Yemen peace talks after weeks of negotiations?

A: As we all know Saudi Arabia and some other petrified regimes in the region struggled to turn the (Kuwait) peace talks on Yemen into a meeting to decide on the future political construction of the country, a construction aligned with demands of the petrified governments.

And this, on the one hand, means infiltration of other countries in domestic issues of Yemen and on the other hand it was the realization of Saudi ambitions in Yemen war.

Since these demands were not met in the battle field and imposing of military pressures, Saudi Arabia started to pursue its aims through negotiations and imposing political pressures. We witnessed that Ansarullah Movement and the party of General People’s Congress ignored Saudi demands and launched Supreme Political Council, a move which sparked the rage of Riyadh to the point that they left negotitiations.

Q: For what objectives have Saudi authorities started the new round of air strikes against Yemen?

A: Here I stress that in analysis of Saudi behavior and its operation in Yemen; we should not look for reasons or logics because the outbreak of Yemen war and its expansion was quite distanced from any acceptable reason.

Anyway some analysts have taken the new round of Saudi bombardments as reaction to recent ground attacks by Yemeni forces and a preventive measure against ground military abilities of Yemen.

Besides, efforts to help and encourage mercenaries, struggling to bring Yemeni groups back to negotiation table as well as dissolution of the Supreme Political Council are among other objectives introduced for this round of talks.

Q: To what extent can we be hopeful of resumption of Yemen peace talks, regarding the new intensification of military confrontation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen?

A: Ansarullah and other Yemeni groups have shown satisfactory capabilities in negotiations; hence, they are not concerned over continuation of talks though they believe that these talks should not decide on the political construction of Yemen and any decision in this line, based on international and global laws, particularly belongs to Yemeni nation.

Indeed, objectives and demands of the opposite side are in full contrast with those of Ansarullah and other Yemeni groups and this is an important issue which can prevent resumption of talks.

Q: What is the meaning of Supreme Political Council’s beginning amid the present situation?

A: Beginning of the Supreme Political Council of Yemen manifests unity and cooperation of Yemeni groups and means a return to the accurate process halted by one and half year of imposed war on Sana’a.

This is the very process which dissatisfies the western powers; therefore, they try hard to support the regional lag for imposing any kind of pressure against Yemeni nation.
