The attack, which took place at a police checkpoint located at the entrance to the Kazimiyah district on Tuesday, killed at least 23, including more than a dozen civilians en route to the shrine of Imam Musa Kazim (PBUH) in the last days of the holy month of Ramadan.

At least 35 people were also injured with more than half of them civilians.

Many cars were waiting at the checkpoint heading to the holy shrine for the auspicious occasion of the Eid al-Fitr.

The Kazimiyah district, which lies on the Tigris river, is a predominantly Shia area.

The crisis in Iraq escalated after the ISIL terrorists took control of Mosul, in a lightning advance on June 10, which was followed by the fall of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital.

More than one million people have been displaced in Iraq so far this year, according to the United Nations.
