CAR Muslims Face Rwanda-like Genocide

Long months after violence ripped Central African Republic, a former Seleka general has warned that the country was turning to a new Rwanda for the Muslim minority, accusing French and African troops of falling to protect Muslims and restore stability in the strife-torn country.

"How will they protect the town of Bria if they could not protect Bangui?" Abdelkader Khalil asked in an interview with Anadolu Agency on Monday, April 14.

Since the eruption of the conflict last December, about 1 million Central Africans have been internally displaced inside the republic.

Moreover, more than 82,000 central African Muslims have fled to neighboring countries including Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo and Chad.

The death toll has also climbed to more than 2,000 people, mostly Muslims, including women and children, the refugee agency stated.

Despite of deploying hundreds of forces, French troops failed to protect the Muslim minority, attacking their protests and allowing mass killings by anti-balaka Christian militias.

The latest event occurred in Bria, the capital of Haute-Kotto, one of the 14 prefectures of CAR, when scores of Muslims were attacked by teargas fired by French forces when they protested against their deployment.

"French troops spoil the atmosphere wherever they go," Khalil said.

"Muslims and Christians want peace and the international troops are proving weak in front of anti-balaka," he added.

The former general warned that the country might slowly become a new Rwandan.

His warning echoed calls from the Union of African Scholars last February that CAR crisis was turning into genocide perpetrated against Muslims, in a sharp reminder of the genocide of Tutsi in the Republic of Rwanda.

Between April and July 1994, Rwanda's Hutu extremists conducted an organized campaign aimed at wiping out the Tutsi minority.

Human Rights Watch has described the Rwandan genocide as "one of the most terrifying episodes of targeted ethnic violence in recent world history."
