Rafsanjani calls for better relations with outside world

Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said on Monday that the Foreign Ministry must use opportunities to improve relations with the outside world and steer clear of sloganeering of the domestic political parties.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani told members of the Institute for political and international studies affiliated to the Expediency Council that the terminology of national and vital interests has special meaning in the foreign policy.

He referred to his Moscow visit in the former Soviet era and said in the meeting with Michael Gorbachev agreements reached with major impacts on Iranˈs strength to safeguard the territorial waters and lands and they still serve as basis for many contracts.

He said that after the collapse of former Soviet Union and independence of the Central Asian states both knowledge and technology of the country on special issues were upgraded.

Rafsanjani said that there were a number of neighbors willing to expand ties and economic and commercial ties with Iran due to the countryˈs humanitarian behavior.

He noted that Iranˈs policy when accepting the United Nations resolution on ceasefire between Iran and Iraq in 1988 was a model for foreign policy based on dignity, prudence and expediency.
