‘UNSC must issue anti-Israel resolution’

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has called on the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution to condemn Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip.
‘UNSC must issue anti-Israel resolution’

During an extraordinary meeting of the NAM Coordinating Bureau at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday, Iranian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Gholam Hossein Dehqani along with representatives from a number of NAM member states discussed Israel’s attack on Gaza. NAM is currently chaired by Iran.

They denounced Israel’s crimes in the Gaza Strip and called for immediate international action to put an end to the regime’s brutal attacks. They also approved an action plan to help stop Israel’s war on Gaza.

In the proposal, the NAM Coordinating Bureau called on the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution within a specific time-frame to condemn Israel’s crimes and push for a cease-fire.

It also said that the resolution should call for the lifting of the blockade on the Gaza Strip, help release Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gazans.

The NAM Coordinating Bureau also issued a separate statement to condemn an Israeli attack on a UN-run school in the northern Gaza Strip, urging the establishment of an international fact-finding committee to probe the onslaught and report it to the UN. The violent attack in Beit Hanoun late Thursday claimed the lives of at least 16 people, among them seven children, and injured more than 200 others.

This comes as at least 816 people have so far been killed and over 5,200 others wounded since the Israeli military first launched its offensive on the Palestinian enclave on July 8.

The UN Security Council convened a session late Sunday on the worsening situation in Gaza. It expressed "serious concern" about the rising civilian death toll and demanded an immediate end to the conflict, but fell short of condemning Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
