Muslim Brotherhood substitutes Moderate Arab States

By Seyyed Morteza Nematzadeh
Muslim Brotherhood substitutes Moderate Arab States
Following the failure of the US to carry out its ambitious plan of the Great Middle East under George W Bush (junior), Moderate Arab States Group including six (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Countries plus Egypt and Jordan was founded led by Saudi Arabia which has been the oldest ally of the US in the region, a move that aimed at cooperating with the US, compromising with the Zionist regime and confronting with the Resistance.

This group was founded to follow the US policies, take a compromising stance regarding the Zionist regime and also to spread this strategy because according to the terminology of the US policy any person or country who opposes the arrogant strategies of Washington, particularly with the crimes committed by the Zionist regime, is called an extremist or probably a terrorist and should be destroyed in any possible way.

Therefore the naming of the group, the moderate group, means that the opposite front resists the US and the Zionist regime, is the extremist group and confrontation with whom is not only natural but also mandatory.

This group, during the past years, has either taken a neutral stance regarding the crimes committed by the Zionist regime or have weakly reacted under the pressure of the domestic and international Islamic or Arab bodies.

In the attacks against the Palestinian and Lebanese civilians during the 33 and 22-day wars, it has had partly cooperation with the Zionist regime and prior to the attacks either the group or the leading members including Saudi Arabia or Mubarak-ruled Egypt had to show the green light for the invasion.

Other grounds for ties among the moderate group and the Zionist regime is cooperation in security and intelligence covering wider operations like assassination of some Palestinian and Lebanese officials including Imad Mughniyeh, senior member of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, in Syria and Mahmoud al Mabhouh, senior Hamas military commander, in United Arab Emirates.

Also cooperation of the moderate coalition with the US in invading and occupying Iraq and Afghanistan and also housing air and sea military bases of the US army is another part of the service provided by the moderate coalition for the US.

Meanwhile information services provided by the media affiliated to the mediate coalition and the services of these governments to the US plans, particularly for defaming the resistant countries, like Iran, Syria, Lebanese Hezbollah and recently Iraq, also waging religious clashes and accusing Iran of interfering in the domestic affairs of Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Afghanistan as well as spreading Shi’ism in Sunni dominated countries in a bid to provoke the Sunni community against Iran.

An important part of the services provided by the moderate coalition is in their support of the US and the Zionist regime to the point that the efforts of Islamic Republic of Iran for Muslim unity are facing serious challenges. Though the outbreak of the Awakening uprisings in the Arab countries particularly Egypt, a major axis of the moderate coalition, plus the spread of the movement towards other countries in this coalition including Jordan, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia has not only torn the movement from within and questioned its efficiency but also has undermined its fame and credibility.

Therefore, it seems that the US is trying to change its political strategy in the region, something it can follow through its two regional allies, Qatar and Turkey.

Qatar and Turkey, two US allies, have built good bridges with Egypt tightening the ties with Muslim Brotherhood.

Qatar, providing financial aids for Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and particularly through SheykhYusuf Qardawi, Egyptian cleric residing in Qatar and a former member of Muslim Brotherhood, has claimed an important place for itself.

Sheikh Hamad Al Thani, the ruling Emir of the State of Qatar, is said to have invested a sum of $ 18 billion in Egypt supporting its banks with an amount of two billion dollars to aid its national currency besides the money he has specialized for the President to spend based on his own decisions.

Turkey also, due to the organizational relations between Justice and Development Party (JDP), founded in 2001, and Muslim Brotherhood and as the mother party, has an important stance for Muslim Brotherhood. This is while Turkey has recently decided to finance Egypt with an amount of two billion dollars aid. Therefore at the moment the triangle of Egypt, Turkey and Qatar practically make the nucleus of a new axis in the region which on the one hand has its ties with the US through Qatar and Turkey and on the other hand it maintains its relations with some Arab governments like Tunisia and Maghreb as well as the political parties in other Arab countries.

During the eight-day war in Gaza, this movement found the opportunity to show its capability particularly when the moderate coalition and its leading member, Saudi Arabia, was absent as if its absence was a sign that it had surrendered the power to the new movement, Muslim Brotherhood.

It means that it is not the American Islam which tries to influence the region but a revolutionary Islam with Brotherhood features. This type of Islam tries not only to reduce its differences with the US but also tries to find common interests out of which one might be hindering the growth of resistance and also the role of Iran in the region!

In other words the US might approve the empowerment of Muslim Brotherhood governments in some Arab countries instead of recognition of the US interests in the region.

But what happens to the disagreements of Muslim Brotherhood with the Zionist regime? Although Muslim Brotherhood stresses its opposition and confrontation with the Zionist regime and counts defending the Palestinians as its principle, it does not believe in prioritization of the issue. Rather it prioritizes strengthening the foundations of Brotherhood across the Arab world; therefore, Brotherhood is said to be a supporter of the foundation of Palestinian government in the occupied lands of 1967, an American plan saying two governments of Israel and Palestine in the occupied lands.

The new axis, Qatar, tries to realize and pay the necessary costs of the national reconciliation in Palestine. This approach by Muslim Brotherhood has faced Islamic resistance with a big challenge.

On the one hand its dependence on resistance mandates that resistance does not stand as its first priority rather strengthening the foundations of the government and spread of that across the occupied lands, the west and east banks and the Arab parts of Al Quds through reconciliation with Mahmoud Abbas and the National Authority as well as Fatah and coming to a long lasting reconciliation with Israel stands as the first priority.

On the other hand, though, the resisting nature of this movement and consequently its popularity necessitates prioritizing confrontation with the Zionist regime and looks at government as a means at the service of resistance.

At the moment Hamas has challenges within itself. The exterior organization of the movement led by Khaled Mashal, head of the political wing of the movement, which has built wide relations with Qatari rulers, has shown more tendencies for the political strategies in confrontation with the Zionist regime and liberation of Palestinian lands while the interior construction of Hamas supports military solutions against the occupation of the Palestinian lands.

Although the eight-day resistance of the Palestinian groups particularly targeting the Zionist capital of Tel Aviv with missiles shows that the resistance has crossed all American and Zionist red lines and a full support for all out resistance, this stress on resistance can be counted as one of the most important messages of the eight-day war. However this challenge cannot be considered the last one because some Hamas leaders have practically shown that they have been expecting both the Resistance and the triangle of Qatar, Turkey and Egypt.

Now the questions are: How will the future regional ties of the Resistance and Muslim Brotherhood be? How are they managed at the service of the Resistance and the interests of the Islamic community? And finally how can a maximum conflict and minimum convergence be achieved amid this situation?
