Tehran-Riyadh co-op, a must

The new horizons that have opened in the political spectrum of Saudi Arabia as well as its foreign policy, following the new king’s accession to the throne and the appointment of his cabinet, is a promising development which can bring about positive changes in Tehran-Riyadh ties, said Hossein Sadeqi, Iran’s envoy to Saudi Arabia.
Tehran-Riyadh co-op, a must
The new monarch was able to carry out broad reforms in the kingdom within a short period without any tension and there are now growing hopes that King Salman might pursue a realistic foreign policy given the chaotic conditions in the Middle East, wrote Wednesdays edition of 'Iran Daily'.

The Middle East and the Persian Gulf region in particular are about to witness striking developments due to the lack of cooperation among regional powers and the presence of extremist groups seeking to implement their own plots.
Extremists are making the best use of growing discord among regional countries by amplifying divisions and fueling disputes in order to advance their own agenda, it noted.

The terrorist ISIL group has not only created instability and insecurity in the region but has also tarnished the image of Islam which is the religion of mercy. Such brutality and acts of terror has negatively impacted the global position of the region and undermined the world of Islam.

Ultra-regional powers only try to secure their own interests without caring about the dire situation of the region as long as their interests are preserved.

In this critical condition, cooperation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, as two major regional countries, is necessary to restore security and stability to the Middle East and safeguard mutual interests by regulating oil prices.

It is undeniable that the crisis created by terrorist and extremists groups is growing by the day. Tehran and Riyadh, in collaboration with other regional countries, can work together to bring the region out of this situation, suggested the paper.

Therefore, it is very important for both countries to adopt a realistic approach, and recognize their key role in the region in order to end the crises, it added.

A one-sided outlook will not help at all and only force both sides to pay a heavier price, paving the way for foreign elements to fish in troubled waters.

Former Iranian president Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and late king Abdullah tried to establish new bilateral relations and promote cooperation. Their efforts produced positive results in certain areas which benefited both countries as well as the Muslim world. This positive trend continued during the tenure of ex-president Mohammad Khatami when bilateral relations reached a high level, noted the paper.

Now that King Salman has assumed power, it is expected the monarch, who has a good record as the governor of Riyadh and the crown prince, would adopt a new approach to promote ties so that both countries can begin a new era of cooperation in all fields that would safeguard mutual interests and prevent ill-wishers from harming their strong bonds, wrote the paper in conclusion.
