Putin: No country can intimidate or isolate Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin says no country can “intimidate” or “isolate” Russia, after Western governments impose additional sanctions on Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine.
Putin: No country can intimidate or isolate Russia

"Of course, no one will be able to intimidate us, or contain and isolate Russia. No one has ever been able to and no one ever will," said Putin in a speech on Saturday.

The Russian president also said that Russia must be prepared to “go through certain difficulties and always give an adequate response to all the threats to its sovereignty, stability and the unity of society.”

The remarks by Putin came a day after the United States and the European Union imposed additional sanctions against Crimea over its integration with the Russian Federation after breaking away from Ukraine earlier this year.

In addition, Canada slapped on Friday new bans on Russia over the Ukrainian crisis, including additional restrictions on the export of technology used in Russia’s oil and gas industry.

Tensions between Russia and the West heightened after Crimea declared independence from Ukraine on March 17 and formally applied to become part of Russia following a referendum a day earlier, in which 96.8 percent of participants voted in favor of the secession. The voter turnout in the referendum stood at 83.1 percent.

The reunification fueled pro-Russia protests in the eastern regions of Ukraine. The Western-backed Kiev government launched military operations in mid-April to silence the protests.

Violence intensified in May after the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions held local referendums, in which their residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine.

The United States along with Western governments accuse Russia of sending troops into eastern Ukraine in support of the pro-Russian forces, an allegation denied by the Kremlin.
