Police used water jets and pepper spray to disperse the demonstrators, who were mainly teachers, in Saturday’s protest which was organized by labor unions in the Kizilay district of Ankara.

According to some unconfirmed reports, up to 100 people were arrested, including the Egitim-Is education union chief, Veli Demir.

Turkish authorities said the protest was illegal.

“We stood up for the rights of our teachers and civil servants, but we were the victims of a police attack without any warning,” Mehmet Balik, a union chief said, adding, “They soaked down the group, which also included children and the elderly.”

The demonstrators censured intervention by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey’s education system, which they claimed undermine the country's secularity.

The protesters were demanding “respect for secular education and labor.”

In September, the Turkish government revoked a ban on Islamic headscarves for female students in high schools, and has encouraged the establishment of schools with mixed religious education and modern curriculums.
