The United Forum for Quranic Studies (UFQS) will conduct semi-final and final competitions in recitation of the holy Quran for children aged below 12 to promote study and implementation of the principles pronounced in the holy text.

Addressing a press conference earlier this week, UFQS chairman Md. Dawood said about 1,000 students took part in the preliminary competitions. Of this, 300 were selected for semi-finals. Six non-Muslims were also selected for semi-finals this year as against one girl Swarna Lahiri last year, he said.

Mr. Dawood said the competitions were being conducted in two categories -- professional (those who study in madrassas) and non-professionals. Fifteen students from each category would be selected for finals.

Awards of Rs. 35,000, Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 15,000 would be given to the first, second and the third prize winners in both categories. Students who make it to the finals would be given a cash prize of Rs.1,000, he added.
