The book which is the fourth novel by Mailer was edited by E.L.Doctorow before going for publication. ‘An American Dream’ takes the illusion of the American life into consideration. It is written in a poetic style heavy with metaphor that creates unique and hypnotizing narrative and dialogue, Taqrib News Agency (TNA) qouted IBNA as saying.

The novel was controversial for its portrayal and treatment of women, and was singled out for critiques by feminist critics. Mailer avoided defending himself directly, instead speaking his own case through an extended defense of two other writers who were also singled out by Millett, Henry Miller and  D.H.Lawrence.

‘An American Dream’ was translated into Persian by Soheil Sommi in 344 pages with a print run of 1500 copies by Qoqnous Publications.

Mailer is known as a writer critical of the policies adopted by the United States government. In "An American Dream" he also questions some of the cultural standards of his country.
