At least eight people have lost their lives as earthquake measuring 5.3 on Richter scale has jolted eastern part of Afghanistan on Sunday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale has hit Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan.
 
The earthquake occurred at 2:27 a.m. local time on Monday at a depth of 10 kilometers. The quake was also felt in Kabul, the capital of the country, Laghman and Kunar.

"Sunday night's earthquake has caused financial and human losses in Kunar province," Mawlavi Najibullah Hanif, the spokesperson for the provincial governor, told the Bakhtar News Agency, adding that casualties could rise.


Ealier in June, a strong earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan, including Paktika and Khost provinces. According to Taliban government officials, 1500 people died and 2000 others were injured in this deadly earthquake.
