Iran’s Foreign Ministry endeavoring to resolve Sheikh Zakzaky situation peacefully

7 Aug 2019 - 15:51

Sheikh Zakzaky issue should preferably be solved between the Nigerian government and Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and any form of violence should be avoided.

Hamidreza Dehqani, Iran’s former representative in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in an interview with Taqrib News Agency (TNA) said the country’s Foreign Minister has made its best to settle the issue of Sheikh Zakzaky through a mutual agreement between the Nigerian government and the IMN.

He stressed,” Certainly health condition of the prominent Shia leader is important and human rights necessitates that he has access to medical facilities.”

Iranian official vowed the country’s full support to settle the Nigerian cleric’s issue.

“Our utmost efforts at Iran’s Foreign Ministry are focused on diplomatic solutions to peacefully settle the issue so that the Shia cleric is not damaged and the whole issue is not led towards a quagmire” he said.

Zakzaky, the founder of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), has been in detention since December 2015 after his residence in the city of Zaria was raided by Nigeria’s forces, during which he was beaten and lost vision in his left eye.

Recently a Nigerian court has granted bail to Muslim cleric Sheikh Ibrahim al-Zakzaky so that he can fly to India for medical care, his lawyer says.
