Ankara and Doha inked a landmark agreement for the purchase of 100 of Turkey's indigenous “Altay” tanks, Deputy Chairman of Turkey’s Justice and Development (AK) Party Ali İhsan Yavuz announced on Tuesday.

According to the agreement, Turkey’s domestic armored vehicle manufacturer BMC will initially produce 40 Altay tanks and deliver them to Doha within 24 months as part of the first phase.
Mass production of the Altay tanks is set to start with 250 units after the initial batch delivery to Qatar.
The financial value of the contract was not revealed.
The Altay project is Turkey's first main battle tank development program, which includes electronic command and control systems, a 120 mm gun, and armor, all of which will be made by Turkish defense companies.
Altay's prototype of the tank was shown to the public at a 2011 defense show in Istanbul.
