Turkish Justice Minister: ‘Khashoggi’s case is universal and no one can cover it up’

3 Nov 2018 - 13:32

The death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in his country’s consulate has become universal, and no one can cover it up or escape responsibility, said Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul.

During an interview, Gul told reporters that Turkey is looking forward to close cooperation with Saudi officials regarding Khashoggi’s murder and that Riyadh should provide support to reveal the truth about it.
The minister added that Turkish government is waiting for Riyadh to answer its questions as soon as possible. In this context, he pointed out that the Turkish prosecution did not obtain any answers from the Saudi Attorney-General despite the submission of written questions about Khashoggi’s death.”
This depends on the prosecution. However, I think this will not be possible because the crime scene is in Turkey. I believe it would not be right to tackle another stage before answering Turkey’s questions,” said Gul on the possible visit of the Turkish Attorney-General to Saudi Arabia. He stressed that the Turkish judiciary would conduct an in-depth investigation to find answers to the questions addressed to the Saudi side.
Gul asserted that the information, which the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Istanbul revealed, confirms that Khashoggi was killed brutally. He pointed out that the Turkish judiciary can reveal the full details of the crime.
Istanbul prosecutor says Khashoggi strangled then dismembered
He insisted that “keeping the murder suspects in Saudi Arabia, leaves some questions about Khashoggi’s assassination unanswered, so the Saudi authorities are required to support the ongoing investigations in this regard,” noting that “Ankara has asked the Saudi authorities to extradite Khashoggi’s killers and is waiting for Riyadh’s acceptance.”
Turkish Justice Minister pointed out that the international community and public opinion around the world are waiting eagerly to know the details of the murder of the Saudi journalist.
Similarly, Gul emphasised that competent Turkish authorities will continue to investigate the crime.
On Wednesday, Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that “Jamal Khashoggi, who  was about to get paperwork for his forthcoming marriage, was strangled to death as soon as he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October, according to a plan prepared in advance.”
The Turkish prosecutor said in a statement that “the body of Jamal Khashoggi was disposed of after being dismembered.”
After 18 days of silence, Riyadh admitted Khashoggi’s murder inside the Saudi consulate after an alleged “dispute” and announced the arrest of 18 Saudis to be investigated, while the whereabouts of the body is still unknown.
The Saudi story was widely questioned and contradicted by other unofficial Saudi accounts. One of these said that “a team of 15 Saudis, who were sent to meet Khashoggi, anaesthetized and kidnapped him, before strangling the journalist to death when he resisted in the course of a dispute.”
