21 Palestinian journalists detained in Israel jails

7 Sep 2018 - 14:05

Some 21 Palestinian journalists are being held in harsh conditions in Israeli jails contrary to international laws, the Palestinian Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Committee said.

In a statement issued yesterday, the committee condemned the continued detention and prosecution of Palestinian journalists and media workers, pointing out that Israel aims to hide its hideous crimes from the international community.
It added that Israel wants to intimidate journalists, restrict their movement and freedom to perform their humanitarian, journalistic and national duty.

According to the statement the Palestinian journalists “have been arrested in violation of all international laws. Some of them are in administrative detention without charge or trial while some serving an effective prison sentence.”
The statement explained that the journalists are subjected to systematic medical negligence while some journalists have been shot by the Israeli army while conducting their duties.
The Committee called for an end to the Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists and and appealed for the international community to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2222, which provides for the protection of journalists.
