Van hits people, kills one injures three near Dutch concert

18 Jun 2018 - 14:56

A van has run over pedestrians near concert hall in southern Netherlands killing one and injuring three others, Dutch police has announced.

Police said the attack took place on Monday morning near the site of a popular music festival in Limburg Province in the south of the Netherlands, adding that the vehicle fled the scene and is now being sought.

“Three people were seriously injured and one person was killed,” the Limburg police wrote on Twitter.

The police statement said the street where the incident took place, one of two exits from the concert grounds, had been closed for investigation.

Other media reports described the vehicle linked to the incident as a small white bus.

An alert service sent by emergency authorities to cell phones in the area warned people to stay alert for a Fiat Diablo with the number 257 as part of its license plate.

RTL news reported that a trauma helicopter, ambulances and a heavy police presence were at the scene.

It is not clear as of yet whether the incident was a simple “hit and run” or a terror attack.

In April last year, Dutch police responded to a terrorist threat against a rock concert in the city of Rotterdam upon a tip-off by officials in Spain,  which had just suffered a number of terror assaults.

In the UK, a terror attack at the end of a concert killed at least 22 people, including seven children, at the Manchester Arena in 2017.

France also suffered major attacks in Paris in November 2015, targeting cafes and a concert hall in Paris, and massacring a total of 130 people.

Both attacks in Manchester and Paris were claimed by the Daesh terror group, which used to control swathes of land in Iraq and Syria.
