Doha to pay tribute to Iranian auteur Abbas Kiarostami

Doha film institute (DFI) is planning to commemorate internationally acclaimed Iranian auteur Abbas Kiarostami during celebrating his cinematic masterpieces.

Some 14 short screen creation and feature length films selected from among the auteur’s directorial works are programmed to be screened at the ceremony.

Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry, Certified Copy, The Wind Will Carry Us, And Life goes On…, Through the Olive Trees, and Where is the Friend’s Home, are among the movies that will be presented at the event.

Kiarostami has been also invited to attend the commemorating ceremony, said director of Doha Film Institute and Islamic Arts Museum Abdulaziz Al khater.

“DFI is proud to present this rich selection of Abbas Kiarostami’s great works for the first time in the region, he stated.

“One of the most admired contemporary auteurs of cinema, Abbas Kiarostami is an inspiration for emerging as well as established filmmakers. His approach to filmmaking, which often defies conventional techniques, is much discussed and often emulated,” said head of Film Programming at Doha Film Institute Ludmila Cvikova.

The commemorating celebration is scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21, 2013.

Kiarostami was also paid tribute by Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) during a retrospective seminar held few days ago.

HKIFFS in its monthly program had earlier hosted Kiarostami’s film retrospective and workshop in May, 2013.

The internationally-lauded Iranian film director, screenwriter and photographer Abbas Kiarostami has mounted numerous artistic workshops and programs in different countries.

Born in 1940, Kiarostami has received very positive reviews and acclaim from international critics for his diverse works of art such as painting, photography, Poetry and filmmaking.

He has also garnered many prestigious awards, including the 1997 Cannes Golden Palm award and the 2008 Glory to the Filmmaker award of the Venice Film Festival.
