Iranian Embassy strongly rejects Azeri MP's allegations

Earlier today, member of the Azeri parliament's security and defense committee Zahed Orouj had claimed in an interview with Modern Az website that terrorist activities against Azerbaijan serve the interests of Iran.

A few hours later today, Director of the Media Section of the Iranian Embassy in Baku Seyed Mohammad Ayatollahi dismissed Orouj's allegations as "completely baseless", saying that Iran, as a victim of terrorism, is willing to have cooperation with the world states in joint war on terrorism.

"The noble people of Azerbaijan know well that Iran has been a victim of terrorism and many of its high-ranking officials and nuclear scientists have been a victim of terrorism in repeated cases," the Iranian diplomat said.

"Iran is ready to cooperate with friendly states, including Azerbaijan, in the confrontation against terrorism," he added.

Ayatollahi stressed that counterterrorism is a major objective of Iran's foreign policy.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in September called current relations between Iran and Azerbaijan as friendly and constructive, and said that Tehran tries to explore new avenues for expansion of bilateral ties.

The Iranian foreign minister pointed out that despite the attempts made by the enemies to sow discord between the two brotherly nations and governments, Tehran is eager to boost and strengthen mutual ties in various political, economic, business and cultural arenas with Baku. /SR
