Gaza engineers generate electricity from the sea

After four years of hard work, four Palestinian engineers from Gaza have succeeded in generating electricity using waves from the sea.
The four engineers first started working on the system as part of their final year project during their degrees at the Islamic University of Gaza in 2016.
Due to the severe lack of electricity in Gaza, they decided to trial the hydropower system to help solve the electricity crisis in the besieged enclave.
A group of academics from the university and a number of prominent engineers and businessmen attended the inauguration of the project yesterday along with engineers Mahmoud Abu Zeid, Ghazi Aslih, Haytham Mashtaha and Mahmoud Murad.
Mushtaha said the research project provides power with a capacity of 12-15 kW; it can supply electricity to seven homes, while the next phase is expected to provide 20-25 watts if material to carry it through is availability.
He and his colleagues are now hoping to turn the project into a commercial enterprise to alleviate Gaza’s energy crisis.
