The Socialist Forces Front (FFS), the largest opposition party in Algeria, does not object to the idea of postponing the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for April next year.
Opposition in Algeria does not object to delaying elections
The party’s First Secretary Mohammad Haji Gilani said on Saturday that the group believes the presidential elections are not a solution to the country’s political crisis.
“The presidential election is not among our party’s concerns; which is currently looking at how to build a national consensus among Algerians to get out of the crisis,” Gilani said, adding that “the only solution is involving all Algerians in an initiative to achieve national consensus.”
Earlier, Ammar Ghoul, the president of Gathering for Hope for Algeria, called for postponing the upcoming presidential elections and holding a national consensus meeting with the participation of the ruling, opposition and national forces.
“The country cannot tolerate another crisis like the 1990s crisis. Algeria needs everyone to agree,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Workers’ Party postponed announcing its position on postponing the presidential elections until its political bureau meets.
