ICRC: Yemen suffers from triad death, destruction and hunger

21 Nov 2018 - 17:29

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said yesterday that Yemen is suffering from death, destruction and hunger which needs to be brought to an end.

In a report published on its official website, the agency said the conflict in Yemen resulted in the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.
“The facts before our eyes including the displacement of millions of Yemenis, food scarcity and the looming spectre of famine from children are all scenes of the war consequences,” it said.
“Life now in Yemen is death, destruction and hunger,” it added.
The report said that in a camp for displaced people in Yemen “mothers are doing their best to provide food to their families, and the daily meal is often made up of a single loaf shared by four members. This is the scene of one day, but on another day the meal could be nothing but plant leaves boiled in water.”
According to the report, as the conflict continues, more Yemenis are forced to flee their homes while children are suffering malnutrition.
ICRC called on warring parties not to target civilians and civilian infrastructure including hospitals and schools, and to allow civilians to flee combat zones. It also called for humanitarian work to be allowed to operate within Yemen.
