Obama: Republicans have 'racked up enough indictments to field a football team'

5 Nov 2018 - 9:33

Former US President Barack Obama says Republicans in control of the White House and Congress have "racked up enough indictments to field a football team."

Obama made the comment Sunday at a rally for Democrats ahead of the midterm elections on Tuesday.

"All right, so now they've had two years of total control in Washington," Obama said. "What have they done with that power?"

He was campaigning for Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly at a rally in Gary, Indiana,
"Nah, nah, nah, it's not true. They haven't done nothing.

They've done something," the former president told the crowd. "They promised they were going to take on corruption in Washington. Instead, they've racked up enough indictments to field a football team."

As part of a special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between the Russian government and US President Donald Trump’s associates, as well as potential obstruction of justice and financial crimes, four people -- Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, and George Papadopolous -- have been charged, pleaded guilty, or have been convicted at trial.

"Nobody in my administration got indicted," Obama said.

"Which, by the way, is not that high a bar."

This is while the president believes that the investigation is a "hoax," a “witch hunt,” or a “scam.”

The investigation seeks to find out whether the Russian government coordinated with Trump’s aides after the intelligence community’s conclusion that the Kremlin helped with the New York billionaire’s campaign effort ahead of winning the White House, an allegation dismissed both by Moscow and the president.

Democrats have been taking the chance to whip up support among their members in the upcoming midterms.

All 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate will be contested in the middle of Donald Trump's first term on November 6.

The midterms could potentially lead to a shift in power in US Congress.

The Democratic Party needs 23 seats in the House in the upcoming elections to take control of the lower chamber, while it needs only two Senate seats to win back the upper chamber as well.
