Russian opposition leader Navalny freed from jail

Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny has been released from jail on Sunday following three weeks behind bars over staging anti-Kremlin protests.

The 42-year-old Navalny, who had been held at a detention center in the south of Moscow since September 24, was released early on Sunday.

Navalny finished a previous 30-day incarceration in September for organizing an unauthorized rally at the start of the year.

The Kremlin critic has repeatedly been jailed over the past year for organizing unauthorized public meetings and rallies.

The latest demonstration by Navalny’s supporters and opposition groups was against the raising of the retirement age, which coincided with regional elections last month.

The Kremlin suffered small defeats in those polls, with voters rejecting candidates from the ruling United Russia Party in two regions only.

Navalny attracted attention when rallies against Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Russia in 2011 and 2012 following allegations of vote-rigging in parliamentary polls.

The opposition figure was barred from running for president in this year’s presidential election in March over a string of administrative and criminal charges. He has rejected those charges as “politically-motivated.”
