UN court orders US lifts some sanctions against Iran

4 Oct 2018 - 17:04

The President of the International Court of Justice, Judge Abdul-Qawi Ahmed Yousef, said Wednesday that the court has unanimously agreed that the United States should remove any impediments to the export various essential materials to Iran.

The ruling focused particularly on medicine and medical devices, food and agricultural commodities and spare parts and equipment necessary to ensure the safety of civil aviation.
The court considers that sanctions on goods “required for humanitarian needs” could have severe and devastating effects on the health and lives of individuals on Iranian territory.
The court added that sanctions on aeroplane spare parts could “endanger the safety of civil aviation in Iran as well as the lives of its users”.
The court judges unanimously ruled that sanctions on some goods constituted a “violation” of the 1955 Treaty of Amity signed between the US and Iran.
