Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remark in a meeting with Alice Walpole, Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq.

During the meeting held on Tuesday in Tehran, Amir-Abdollahian highlighted the need for a more active participation of the United Nations in assisting in reconstruction of Iraq and promotion of security, stability and welfare of Iraqi people; “the UN needs to pursue a more comprehensive plan for the process of reconstruction in Iraq,” he added.

“Iraq should not be used as a place for retaliatory moves and conflicts of some regional and transregional countries with unconstructive roles,” he stressed.

He added that Iraq’s recent victories in the fight against ISIL and the country’s parliamentary election should receive serious support from the international community.

The Iranian official further voiced Iran’s continued support for Iraq so that the war-torn country would be able to play its natural role in the region.

The UN official, for her part, thanked Iran for its contribution in combating terrorism and assisting Iraq, saying “Iraq reconstruction requires global and all-out efforts through international organizations and participation from neighboring countries.”

The two sides also expressed optimism at the political process and the future of Iraq in the region.
