The Muslim Brotherhood yesterday commemorated its 90th anniversary in a ceremony in Istanbul under the slogan “90 years of giving”.

The ceremony was attended by dozens of Muslim Brotherhood leaders from around the world, including Ibrahim Mounir, the movement’s deputy leader and the former head of the Hamas political bureau, Khaled Meshaal. Thousands of the Brotherhood’s members from various Arab countries also took part.
Since its inception on 22 March 1928, many of the movement’s leaders and members have been arrested and imprisoned by Arab governments, under the pretext that the group is involved in terrorism. Little, if any, credible evidence has ever been produced for this allegation.
Nevertheless, Arab regimes, such as those in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have designated the Brotherhood as a “terrorist” group. Many of its members and leaders live with government-imposed travel bans.
The Brotherhood has a presence in 52 Arab, European, Asian and African countries. It is also represented across North and South America as well as Australia.
