A third of UAE residents spy on their partners online, says new report

10 Feb 2018 - 10:22

A third of all residents in the UAE spy on their partners’ online habits, a new study has found. Research by cyber security company Kaspersky Lab and Toluna shows that 36 per cent of internet users surveyed in the UAE admitted to such oversight of their partners’ online activity.

This figure rises to almost half (45 per cent) among those who describe their relationships as unstable or unsure if they have a future, even though the overwhelming majority professed to valuing privacy both online and offline. Predictably, unhappy partners were found to be more inclined to want to keep their online activities secret from those who professed to be happy, at 80 per cent and 60 per cent respectively.
The authors of the research appear to view online habits of couples as an issue of concern and are keen to stress the need for couples to strike a balance between wanting to have an open relationship and opting to have no privacy or borders at all.
While 80 per cent of residents in the UAE said that they valued their relationships more than their privacy, the reality is that concerns over privacy are causing rifts in relationships, the company warns. Indeed, 39 per cent of respondents said that they have quarrelled with their partner after they have seen something that was meant to be kept private.
“When relationships form, online privacy borders are called into question, along with just how much people are prepared for their partner to know and access about their online life,” said Andrei Mochola, head of consumer business at Kaspersky Lab. “With so many partners using each other’s devices or snooping on their loved ones, privacy boundaries can go out the window.”
It is important to get the balance right between a transparent, honest relationship and keeping your digital life secure, he added. “An open dialogue with your partner and setting privacy boundaries is a good starting point.”
